WESTCHESTER COUNTY CONSUMER PROTECTION DEPARTMENT KEEPS GROCERY STORES HONEST – ENSURING FAIRNESS!

This Summer, our office will continue protecting consumers by conducting annual inspections of every grocery store in Westchester County.

Our inspections are random & rigorous. We ensure that consumers have fair transactions, accurate results from scales & pay the correct price at checkout.

What we do during an inspection:

  • For decades, we inspect all Weighing & Measuring Devices – our Inspectors verify the accuracy of these devices — every scale in the store!
  • Labels are checked to ensure that they meet all labeling requirements – meaning they must have a statement of identity, quantity and responsibility.
  • We check pricing accuracy. Inspectors ensure that the shelf tags match the scanned prices at checkout— including all items advertised as sale items.
  • Check for perishable items which are passed dates on labels.

Our office takes consumer protection very seriously, and annual inspections are a crucial part of maintaining trust and fairness in the marketplace. Most importantly, our inspections help make sure that consumers get what they pay for when visiting a grocery store!

We encourage residents to reach out if they have any questions or concerns about their grocery store shopping experiences. Contact the Westchester County Consumer Protection Department at 914-995-2155.
