Legislator Jim Maisano Negotiates Deal to Save Playland Pool
On Monday evening, June 19, 2017, Board of Legislators Vice Chairman Jim Maisano (R, New Rochelle, Pelham, Pelham Manor) was joined by 14 of his fellow Legislators in passing a $9.54 million Bond Act to completely rehabilitate the pool at Playland Amusement Park.
As a youth, Legislator Maisano competed in the Westchester County Swimming Championship, the “Counties,” at Playland and fondly remembered going on the Dragon Coaster and other rides with fellow swimmers following their competition. Last year, the Board of Legislators approved a deal with Standard Amusements to take over the operations at the County-owned amusement park and the future of the pool became an issue. Throughout the negotiations with Standard Amusements and County Executive Astorino’s Office, Legislator Maisano insisted that the Playland pool must be preserved for Westchester County and the youth of the Sound Shore communities.
Following the 15-2 vote, Legislator Maisano said, “I am very pleased and proud that the Playland Pool will be here for the enjoyment of hundreds of thousands of Westchester County residents for many decades to come. I’m especially happy that those kids whose families can’t afford a membership at a club with a pool will have an easily accessible and affordable option to escape the brutal summer heat and humidity that we often have in the lower Hudson Valley.” He thanked his fellow legislators, Standard Amusements and County Executive Astorino for working with him in putting together this important compromise.
